Beautiful, don’t you think? On our way home we pulled into this Love’s gas station outside Amarillo which is also about a mile from the famous cadillac ranch. I jumped out of my car quickly as I noticed the truck and trailer carrying these beauties were leaving. I grabbed my camera because I had to share the beauty of these sculpted pieces of metal. Whether they were a car, a monument or a piece of jewelry the shape, color, and texture were something you couldn’t easily reproduce. You could feel the love that went into designing them. They weren’t just a car back then. They weren’t just a mode of transportation. They were so much more! It makes you wonder at what point were they just discarded as trash.
The owner of these pieces of art, stopped his vehicle and came back to me and said “does your husband like Fords?”. I’m sure he thought I was a car lover as I snapped away. I quickly replied I am an artist and I proudly proclaimed that I love rust. I also told him that I just adored them for their patina and sculptured design. He wrinkled his nose and quickly chuckled that he was going to work his tail off to get rid of that rust! I’m sure I gave him food for thought for the day or puzzled him greatly. Oh, another strange artist, I’m sure he thought!
I also adore the broken windshield, the bullet hole and the broken radiator. All beautiful! So, I’m starting a muse gallery of photos. Check them out and see if there is anything that speaks to you and can be your inspiration for your next piece. Also, check out www.DailyArtMuse.com for great shots of things that can be your inspiration. Susan Lomuto has quite an eye for the interesting and inspiring!
Speaking of rust and patina finishes. There has been much interest in BronzClay and the finishes you can get. Whole Lotta Whimsy carries two great books on finishes that can be applied:
The Jeweler’s Directory of Decorative Finishes
The Sculptor’s Bible
It’s a brand new day, so get to your bench and play!
